Rob Baard
A life built at the intersection of martial arts and film — and everything that comes from joining them.
Foundation
Two Paths. One Body of Work.
For over thirty years, two disciplines have shaped everything Rob Baard does: martial arts and film. Not as separate careers running in parallel, but as a single integrated pursuit — each one sharpening the other, both arriving at the same territory.
From early ninjutsu training in Geelong through a decade of direct study under Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Japan, Rob developed a deep understanding of how the body moves, how the mind responds under pressure, and how instinct and discipline interact. That understanding informed the films he made, the books he writes, and the students he teaches.
"Stealth is not about tricks or hiding places. It is about how detection escalates, how selection occurs, and how restraint preserves safety and choice."
The films informed the martial arts in return — forcing precision in choreography, economy in movement, and clarity in instruction. Directing Hollywood legend Danny Glover in a feature that sold in over thirty countries was not a departure from the martial path. It was the same discipline expressed in a different language.
The books Rob writes now are the synthesis of both: practical frameworks drawn from lived experience, structured training, professional fieldwork as a licensed private investigator, and decades of studying how the mind actually changes. They are not theory. They are documentation of what works — tested under real conditions across thirty years.

The Journey
From Geelong to Japan and Back
Ninjutsu Begins in Geelong
Formal training starts in a lodge hall. Drills governed by time. Escape from restraint. Concealment under pressure. The instincts that had already kept Rob safe on the streets of a rough neighbourhood now gained structure and language.
Japan — Bujinkan Hombu Dojo
Regular travel to Japan, twice yearly, training directly under Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi and senior Dai Shihan instructors. Over 60 classes completed annually. The insight that emerged: stealth fails not because someone is seen, but because ego persists after probability has already collapsed.
Film and Martial Arts Converge
The first ninja feature films are produced, merging decades of martial arts training with filmmaking. The same discipline that governed training — step by step, never rushed, never beyond what has been prepared for — governs every production.
Hollywood, Investigation, and Teaching
A feature film directed with Danny Glover sells in over thirty countries. Licensed private investigator fieldwork applies the same stealth principles under professional and legal accountability. Mind study qualifications deepen the understanding of how humans change. Teaching continues in Geelong.
The Books — A Life's Work Formalised
The Ninja Saga series, survival manuals, the tarot guidebook, and forthcoming works on Kuji-In, private investigation, and cinema. Each book documents what three decades of convergent disciplines actually looks like in practice.
