But he had been reading people long before that — for more than twenty-seven years in front of the public as a manager, a film director, and a licensed private investigator, in rooms where holding a steady voice could cost or save a life. He trained in Japan, mentored actors on how a small shift in tone changes everything, and studied the mind sciences to put a name to what he had done for decades.
